Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has joined a growing wave of Nigerians demanding the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, over allegations of partisanship.
In a strongly worded statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Yesufu argued that Amupitan’s continued stay in office is no longer tenable, insisting that his actions have undermined public confidence in the electoral body.
The activist, who is also a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), emphasized that the opposition party is serious about accountability and reform, warning that it is “not here to play.”
“I love how active Nigerians have become,” she wrote, praising the surge in civic engagement across the country. “Some years ago, Amupitan would have gotten away with what he tried to do. At this stage, it becomes mandatory that #AmupitanMustGo.”
Yesufu noted that increasing public awareness and participation are critical in driving political change, describing them as “little wins” that could build into larger victories for democracy.
She also expressed disappointment over missing her party’s first convention due to a prior commitment to attend a workshop in Brazil, revealing that the engagement had been scheduled months in advance.
Her comments come amid intensifying scrutiny of INEC’s leadership, as more Nigerians continue to call for transparency and neutrality in the nation’s electoral process.
