Nollywood heavyweight Ini Edo has officially responded to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) following a heated debate over her latest holiday blockbuster, A Very Dirty Christmas.
The tension erupted on Friday, January 2, 2026, after CAN leadership voiced strong objections to the film’s title. The religious body argued that pairing the word “Dirty” with “Christmas”—the sacred celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ—is inherently offensive and undermines the sanctity of the faith.
In a statement released to clear the air, the veteran actress and producer defended the project as a work of pure artistic expression. Ini Edo clarified that the title is a creative descriptor of the film’s gritty and chaotic plot, rather than a commentary on the religious holiday.
Despite the friction with religious leaders, the controversy hasn’t slowed the film’s momentum. A Very Dirty Christmas remains a titan at the 2026 New Year box office, locked in a fierce competition for viewership with Funke Akindele’s record-breaking Behind The Scenes.
While CAN stands by its call for the preservation of religious symbols, the creative community has largely rallied behind Edo, citing the necessity of artistic freedom in modern Nollywood.
