Media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, has stirred reactions after stating that the late actor Alex Ekubo “was not going to glory” but was instead a tragic loss.

Daddy Freeze made the remarks during an Instagram Live session while addressing criticism over his choice of outfit at Alex Ekubo’s service of songs held in Lagos on June 10, 2026.

The broadcaster and his wife had come under fire after attending the event dressed in black despite the invitation specifying that guests should wear white.

Responding to the backlash, Daddy Freeze admitted that he was wrong to disregard the dress code but explained that it was an oversight.

“Yes, I was wrong to have gone in black, but I honestly did not see that part of the invitation,” he said.

The media personality maintained that, in his view, the late actor’s death was too painful to be seen as a celebration.

“I don’t see what they were rejoicing about. For me, it was sorrowful because somebody that young died. He was not going to glory; he was a tragic loss until we were able to wrap our heads around it,” he stated.

Daddy Freeze added that while he believes the actor has gone to a better place, he disagrees with the notion that the timing of his death should be celebrated.

“He had no business dying. I don’t believe he had finished his work on earth,” he said, questioning claims that the actor’s passing should be viewed in the same light as the death of Christ at age 33.

The broadcaster also defended his decision to wear black, noting that in his cultural background, black or traditional attire is commonly worn to funerals.

“I did not understand the white. In my mind, we were mourning and not going for a party. I’m very sorry if anyone feels offended,” he added.

The comments have since sparked fresh conversations on social media about grief, cultural expectations surrounding funerals and differing interpretations of celebrating a life well lived.
