It appears cyber attacks on social media accounts and emails of notable personalities and celebrities by hackers won’t be stopping anytime soon in Nigeria.

It will be recalled that several celebrities have had their social media accounts usurped by hackers and some had to part with cash to get them back. Recently, some hackers seem to have up-ed their game as they have impersonated and hacked notable celebrities like MMMG’s Ubi Franklin amongst others. In their latest move, the hackers/impersonators send a brief email with an attached file.

Once you download the file, it links to a html page meant to store your login details and passwords in a retrieval system. The email is usually sent from a trusted account or from someone you know or someone of importance just to gain your trust. Then the attached file is disguised as a .pdf document but it also has a .html suffix which somehow most people tend to ignore and click.

Once they retrieve your login details, they take control of your account and repeat the same process to other important people in your email address book. Now imagine how many other accounts they will be controlling in a week. The targets seem to be celebrities, publicists, bloggers and people with a large address book. So far I have gotten suspicious emails from quite a few.

See below the screenshot of an email purportedly sent to me by Ubi Franklin. After that y0u will find another one sent by Marv Ekenna of Ringier..

UbiEmail

So after you click the attached document, you see your email login page and you could be fooled into thinking there’s nothing wrong with logging in your details AGAIN on your device.

Now see below screenshot of google login page the fake .pdf file pops up after you try to download the fake file…

Once you type your details and click “Sign in” your details automatically gets sent to them. SAFETY TIP: 1. Sync your email or social media accounts to your phone number for easy recovery and change your passwords every 3 weeks. 2. Do not click or download suspicious files. Especially files with a double suffix or tag. 3. When you get a suspicious email or message, call the sender to confirm or just disregard the email. 4. When messages go to spam, sometimes it’s best to just leave it in spam. 5. ALWAYS check your sent messages folder for activities you didn’t initiate. 6. Fast and pray everyday if you have nudes or important documents stored in your email.
