Nollywood star and billionaire filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about the intense sacrifices, discipline and hard work that shaped her rise to the top of Nigeria’s film industry.
Speaking in a recent chat, the award-winning actress revealed that her success did not come from luck or shortcuts, but from years of self-denial and unwavering focus. According to Akindele, she deliberately stepped away from social life, vacations and public events to build a brand that has since become one of Nollywood’s most successful.
The 48-year-old mother of two disclosed that she isolated herself within Amen Estate for three years, dedicating that period solely to content creation and brand development. During that time, she said, her world revolved around work, her team and storytelling.
“Hard work is hard work. It means putting in the work when you need to, depriving yourself of things many people chase so you can achieve your goals,” Akindele said. “I locked myself away in Amen Estate for three years, building the Jenifa brand and working on Industreet, Aiyetoro, My Siblings and I, and other projects.”
She explained that the sacrifice meant giving up vacations, parties, friendships and leisure, choosing instead to focus entirely on creating content that would stand the test of time.
Akindele also dismissed perceptions of celebrity privilege on movie sets, describing herself as deeply hands-on during production. She said she works behind the scenes without glamour, overseeing every detail until filming is complete.
“When I’m on set, I’m not a diva. No wig, just cornrows. I’m everywhere, making sure everything is in order. The glam and dancing come after the work is done. That’s how hard work turns into success,” she added.
The actress’ journey has paid off remarkably. In 2024, Funke Akindele made history by producing the first Nigerian film to gross over ₦1 billion in cinemas. She has since broken her own record, becoming the first filmmaker to produce a Nigerian movie that crossed the ₦2 billion mark at the box office.
Her story continues to inspire a new generation of creatives, reinforcing the message that sustained success is built on sacrifice, consistency and relentless effort.
