LAGOS, NIGERIA – Nollywood actor Jamiu Azeez has fired back at social media critics following “crazy” viral rumors that he has officially converted to Christianity.
The Church Photo Controversy
The drama began after the actor posted a photo of himself participating in a New Year’s Eve cross-over service, dressed in a traditional white garment (Sutana) and holding a candle. The image immediately ignited a firestorm of speculation across social media, with many fans and religious commentators questioning his faith.
“You Won’t Be Accountable for My Life”
In a fiery response shared via his Instagram page on Monday, January 5, 2026, the actor expressed frustration over the intense scrutiny directed at him. He revealed that he has been “dragged” in his Direct Messages (DMs) and mocked on Facebook blogs.
“It’s only in Nigeria that people are so bothered about another person’s life,” Azeez wrote. “Imagine telling a man in his 40s how to live his life. I posted myself in a White Garment on the Cross-Over night and the comments… are crazy. Like bro, you will not be accountable for my life, oo.”
Religious Freedom or PR Stunt?
While the actor stopped short of confirming a permanent conversion, he staunchly defended his right to explore any spiritual path. Mocking the intensity of the backlash, he joked: “I never even come out to say I have converted oo. Una wan kpai me (You people want to kill me). No worry, I go wear Babalawo cloth tomorrow.”
Azeez emphasized that in a secular society, personal religious choices should not be a source of public warfare, asserting his liberty to practice any religion of his choice without seeking public approval.
