The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to strengthen opposition parties and ensure they play an active role in governance if elected president.

Obi made the commitment during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, which aired on Saturday, where he stressed the importance of inclusive leadership and collaboration across political divides.

According to the former Anambra State governor, political leaders should focus on bringing together diverse ideas and stakeholders to address Nigeria’s challenges rather than promoting partisan interests.

Responding to a question on whether President Bola Tinubu believes his party alone can rescue the country, Obi argued that no political party possesses all the solutions needed to move Nigeria forward.

“If I’m the president of this country, I will do everything possible to make opposition parties strong and participatory in governance,” Obi said.

He added that broad consultations and collective decision-making would produce better outcomes for Nigerians.

“The more you bring everybody together, the more we discuss it, the more we consult, the better result,” he stated.

Obi was among key opposition figures who formed a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in July 2025 and officially joined the party in December of the same year.

However, he exited the ADC in May 2026 to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal divisions and ongoing legal disputes within the party as reasons for his decision.
