Top leaders of the Ijaw nation, alongside thousands of supporters, have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubuand Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for second terms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was announced at a grand reception held in Bomadi, headquarters of Bomadi Local Government Area in Delta State, where Ijaw political stakeholders gathered to honour the governor’s performance in office.
Among those present were the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dennis Brutu Otuaro, and the President of the Ijaw National Congress, Benjamin Okaba, who both played key roles in rallying support for the endorsement.
The motion backing Tinubu and Oborevwori for re-election was formally moved by House of Representatives member Julius Pondi and seconded by state legislator Kenneth Oboro, before being adopted through a voice vote presided over by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor.
The event also drew commendations from political leaders, including Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who praised Oborevwori for deliberate efforts to develop Ijaw communities.
In a highlight of the ceremony, the governor was conferred with the traditional title “Izon Ebimieowei of Delta State,” in recognition of his administration’s impact on the region.
An elated Oborevwori expressed deep appreciation for the honour and the overwhelming support, describing the reception as a homecoming. He noted that his administration had invested over N400 billion in developing Ijaw communities and pledged to expand infrastructure and political inclusion in the area.
“I feel highly honoured… today I feel like an Ijaw man,” he said, promising to reciprocate the support through more projects and appointments.
Speaking at the event, Otuaro urged the people to sustain their backing for Tinubu, citing key federal interventions in the Niger Delta, including infrastructure projects, support for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and the Presidential Amnesty Programme.
He stressed that the President’s developmental efforts in the region deserved continuity, calling on Ijaw people to translate their support into votes in 2027.
The chairman of the event’s organising committee, Funkekeme Solomon, said the reception was a show of gratitude to the governor for his commitment to developing Ijaw areas across the state.
