President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration will not yield to terrorists, bandits, or any form of criminal intimidation, while pledging renewed efforts to address the economic challenges facing citizens across the country.

The assurance was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, held as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Akume said the Federal Government remains committed to fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities and will intensify efforts to reduce the socio-economic difficulties confronting Nigerians through the delivery of sustainable democratic dividends.

According to a statement issued by the SGF’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume acknowledged the realities of economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement affecting many communities, assuring citizens that the government is fully aware of their struggles.

“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume said, stressing that President Tinubu is addressing the challenges with compassion and a strong sense of duty.

He emphasized that protecting lives and property remains a top priority of the administration, describing recent attacks and abductions in several parts of the country as a reminder of the need for sustained security efforts.

Akume stated that the safe return of all Nigerians currently in captivity remains a national priority and noted that security agencies are being equipped with the resources needed to combat criminal activities, secure communities, and protect the country’s territorial integrity.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he declared.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the SGF congratulated citizens on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999. He described the milestone as a testament to the resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for democracy.

He also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle and other pro-democracy advocates who endured persecution, injuries, and even death in the quest for democratic governance.

Akume urged Nigerians to honour their sacrifices by working collectively toward building a stronger, more prosperous, and united nation.

With preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gathering momentum, he called on citizens to reject violence, hate speech, and divisive politics, warning against actions that could undermine democratic values.

He specifically appealed to young Nigerians not to allow themselves to be used for political thuggery, misinformation campaigns, ethnic hostility, or religious intolerance.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he cautioned.

The SGF further urged religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media, and families to promote peace, tolerance, and responsible conduct ahead of the next election cycle.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, interfaith harmony, and peaceful international engagement, Akume maintained that despite existing challenges, the nation’s democratic institutions remain strong and resilient.

He also commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in defending the country and sustaining democratic rule.

The Democracy Day service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” was attended by several top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack, and other dignitaries.
